About Isimila Stone Age Site

Isimila Stone Age Site is a prehistoric settlement located inside Iringa District of Iringa Region in Tanzania. The site is home to the Middle Pleistocene archaeological site, making it one of the most significant prehistoric locations in all of Africa.

Large surface assemblages of later Acheulean lithic artifacts, including hand axes, cleavers, scrapers, and cores, have been found at the site. These tools date back approximately 60,000 to 100,000 years, providing invaluable insights into early human technology and behavior.

Although no human bones have been found at the location, Isimila provides a special view into Middle Pleistocene Hominid behaviour. The site is a registered National Historic Site and features dramatic sandstone pillars that have been sculpted by erosion over millions of years.

The towering natural pillars, some reaching heights of 10 meters, create a surreal landscape that feels almost otherworldly. Combined with the archaeological significance, Isimila offers a unique combination of natural beauty and human history.
