"I absolutely loved this hike. I have explored quite a number of mountains in Uganda, Rwanda and DRC; but haven't experienced such a spectacular thrill like I did at Tanzania's Mount Meru. The dining area, sleeping and toilet facilities are quite impressive. Tanzania has done well. Hongera, TANAPA!"
About Mount Meru
Mount Meru, located in the heart of Arusha National Park, is Tanzania's second-highest peak and Africa's fourth-highest. Often used as a technical warm-up for its taller neighbor, Kilimanjaro, Meru is a spectacular destination in its own right.
The mountain is a dormant stratovolcano that suffered a massive explosion thousands of years ago, leaving a gaping horseshoe-shaped crater with dramatic cliffs.
The ascent takes you through several distinct vegetation zones: lush rainforest filled with monkeys and colorful birds, followed by heath and moorland, and finally a rugged alpine desert. The final push to Socialist Peak (4,562m) involves a thrilling walk along a narrow, rocky crater rim that offers some of the most breathtaking views in Africa—including a perfectly framed sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.
